In 1986, an event celebrating the impact that chemistry has on our everyday lives was organized by then-American Chemical Society President, George Pimental. With his planning, the first National Chemistry Week (NCW) was held on November 6, 1987. The event evolved into an annual event, which celebrates its 30th year in 2017 with the theme “Chemistry Rocks!”

NCW encourages everyone, ACS members and non-members to share the amazing story of chemistry in everyday life with the public, especially primary and secondary school children. Hands-on activities and demonstrations have inspired a passion for celebrating chemistry now and for generations to come.
